Got sacked (what next?)
Listening to the radio station this morning reviewing the subject matter – Job Loss in the country; different views were reviewed and words of encouragement were offered to those affected. I could not but remain in awe for a while, I hear of the situation but not as hearing from a victim. The prevailing situation is prominent in the financial sector in the country; people are been sacked from their places of work without any prior notice and don’t even know the basis for such act. During the holiday season some were laid off, some are been visited with letter terminating their appointment upon resumption from Annual leave. It is a very sad situation as nothing can be done afterward. Everyone is on his/her toe now not knowing whose turn it would hit next. This is about the wrong time to bid your job goodbye even if you have the intention of resigning. What is the problem? I ask myself looking at the situation, laying off developed minds into the streets! Coupled with the battalion outside looking for job placement; weighing it from the employers side; fine they may be in financial turmoil, what about their processes for such operations. Downsizing is an option but not the first in the list. Well it may be unfair or a partial process the truth is that it is happening and more people will still be losing their jobs before long.
What direction is there to turn to? Having People been retrenched from their places of work in their thousands, truly this is one thing employees dread; get sacked, taint a good name and years of credible service; if this can happen to someone what else is there to be afraid of? Now this is the lesson we all need to learn from, what is your worst fear as an employee? because whether we like it or not, we are all going to loose our job someday; either by force or by choice (except if you want to spend your entire life working for someone) what can be done now is to prepare for that day and pray it meets us well. If one have to consider the ongoing crisis in the nation – President recuperating in Saudi; terrorist attempt by our very own; hike in fuel price; and so on, one may tend to drift focus or be distracted. I speak from the stand point of HOPE to inspire you to nurture even a flicker for a desired change. I tell you losing that flicker of hope should be the last thing to cross your mind; loosing it is loosing everything, it is worst than the crisis we are faced with, worst than loosing your job and even worst than death itself, and do you know why its that; because you still have life and can make a great deal out of it.
If I have to give lectures on how to land a job, maintain one or improving your relevance in the work place it may serve no good at this time. The message I bring is the message of hope, which is strong and capable of subduing every situation. You may think it’s easy to write about this because I’m not affected; truth of the matter is that I have been there; from experience I have come to realize that the state of joblessness is the hardest job there is; the virtue that made my burden light is hope. It’s just one of the three legs that give patience a balance – see previous post: Read More. Hope rubbishes every situation. It makes you feel privileged; it tells you to look ones more. It is the spirit that wakes you up in the morning, it tells you “take that move”; the spirit that tells you “tomorrow will be better”. Even when trampled upon – HOPE.
In a subsequent post I will bring to light things we should engage in while working. In times like this just look at yourself and concoct something from within, you were not sacked because of lack of capabilities, you were sacked because your capabilities were beyond what the company can reward, now they sort for cheap labor, outsource anything and lease everything just to spend more as oppose cutting cost strategy. Well better for them, now its time to think for yourself, accept the reality and take hold of your passion. In the words of Abraham Maslow – “If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail”. Given your burning passion as the hammer, what can you see?
